How to get that big family wedding shot

The ‘biggie’ (literally) for any photographer covering a traditional family wedding, has to be the group family snap – usually on the steps of the church or wedding venue – and involving at least 50 individuals.

How do you get everyone to smile and look at the camera at the same time? After all, it’s a snap that can only be taken at that moment in time as it would prove impossible to get everyone together again at a later stage. This is where your charm comes in – after all it’s like being on stage in front of 50 people – all eyes are directed towards you.

Remaining light-hearted (definitely not becoming stressed) and cracking the odd joke or two usually helps. So does counting them down for the click of the camera. But however you get that picture, it’s worth remembering that it’s going to be one of the most sought out and looked at by the rest of the guests.
